But there’s never anyone here. Maybe it’s too fishbowly, too spare, too artless - not just for a museum, but for a room in general. There’s nothing human here, no signs, no gestures. An empty little box at the corner of an architect’s plan.

The latest rash of public ‘art’ - and I can barely even use that word, even uncapitalized - in town is enough to push me over the edge. Misplaced. Misguided. Miseverything. Someone has had a good laugh, selling this shit to the City Fathers. What a bunch of hick rubes, swayed so easily, not by the desire to do things well and thoughtfully, but by their lust for the shortest path between them and some Meaningful Award given by hacks no better equipped or educated than they are. The blind congratulating the blind.

Frost that lovely cake with the petty coldness and acts of social terrorism that happen in a town so small, so cliquish, and it’s enough to make one, or maybe just me, abandon all human contact altogether.

But instead, I’ll come here, to this beautiful building and its architecturally forgotten room. Just beyond the hallway are galleries full of past-tense communications created by a stream of people, some living but most dead, who were just a little out of phase with their times or their communities. I’m feeling a lot out of phase with mine, but then who in their right mind would want to be in phase with this provincial, egotistical burg anyway?

thedirtythirties:

Benjamin Franklin’s Daily Schedule

(via Nick Bilton)

I’m not sure I could ever adhere to a schedule quite this rigorous, but something along these lines has been working well for me lately. In particular I’ve been trying dive into work early in the morning (working from home helps a lot of course), finish the day’s tasks early enough that I’ve still got time for exercise or other non-work diversions before dinner, and make more time for (book) reading in the course of the day.

When you’re a person who works alone, and whose fortunes are completely dependent on your own day-to-day productivity, it can be very easy to fall into the trap of working all the time (particularly when your work requires you to operate on the Maker’s Schedule). Franklin’s plan is an inspiration to me because it reminds me why I went down the tough road of being an indie developer in the first place: to live a more balanced, reflective life.

Attended a concert by The Decemberists last night. It was particularly fine - literary, musical, melodramatic pop. I suppose it’s not for everyone, but they played several of my absolute favorites in the second (!) full set. Eli the Barrow Boy, and (swoon) California One Youth and Beauty Brigade. The latter made the evening, with all its sweaty closeness and standing room only, for me.

Well, I lie. The very last song they played made everything worth it. They finished with Sons & Daughters, and as they played, I looked around at this beautiful crowd of twentysomethings, all fresh and at the beginning, full of stories yet to be written. They were singing - just about all of them - singing this song of hope and rebuilding. It was overwhelming, and just when I thought I couldn’t grin any wider, Meloy articulately implored the crowd to join together for the last phrase of the song. ‘Hear all the bombs that fade away’, loud and clear, over and over, from this giant crowd of youth. It was so gorgeous, so powerful, so connecting. A $30 concert ticket seems an awfully small price to pay for a little piece of restored faith in humanity.

6ft5:

It wasn’t this 7 horse, but one much like it that has kept me wearing my old shoes for now.

I went out to Pinnacle Race Course in New Boston yesterday, as a sort of mental health day. It’s the oddest place - not really finished at all, but you know, there’s a bar and betting and horses and jockeys and it’s all in good fun.

Only one building is built so far (plus the stables) - there are no grandstands or any kind of seating for the crowd. It’s really weird. There are tents and wooden catering tables and folding chairs scattered here and there. The bar inside (where the OTB facilities are) is quite nice, although the bartenders (all girls, and I do mean GIRLs) are a bit green.

That said, I had a blast, it was just the outing I needed. And fun to be able to rub shoulders with the jockeys and trainers. Since there is literally nothing built out yet, there is very little to shield them from the public.

Came out on the losing side for the day, mostly due to that damn 7 horse coming in out of the blue. Longshots - great when you’ve got ‘em, dastardly when you don’t.
